
Orange Opens Final Homestand

SYRACUSE – The Syracuse University softball team (36-11) opens a five-game homestand to close out the 2011 regular season with instate-foe Niagara (18-18) on Wednesday, May 4 at 4 p.m. at the SU Softball Stadium. The Orange is riding a sixth-game winning streak, in which it has outscored its opponents, 41-0. Syracuse matched a program-record for regular-season victories with 36 its last time out.
The Orange has already eclipsed the school mark for home runs with 56. The previous mark of 51 was set in 2006. Junior second baseman Stephanie Watts and senior third baseman Hallie Gibbs have both it a team-best 11 this season. Junior catcher Lacey Kohl is third on the squad with 10. Junior first baseman Kelly Saco and first baseman/cater Jasmine Watson have both nine out of the park. Junior outfielder Lisaira Daniels has four to her credit. Sophomore catcher Ashley Dimon and junior pitcher Jenna Caira round out the list with one home run each.
Niagara is led by Teresa Healy, who currently leads the MAAC in hitting with a .444 average, on-base percentage at .545, slugging percentage at .935, RBI with 39, home runs with 12, doubles with 15 and total bases with 101.
In the circle, freshman Kim Bryson has pitched herself into the hierarchy of MAAC pitchers with strong showings in her 16 appearances. Through 87.1 innings pitched, she has posted an opponents' batting average of .215 and an ERA of 2.65. Her 8.60 strikeouts per seven innings has helped her to four complete game shutouts.
Syracuse is 8-0 all-time against Niagara, outscoring the Purple Eagles, 48-17.
