SYRACUSE – The fifth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team opened the 2011 season with a 4-0 victory versus Monmouth today inside the friendly confines of J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange recorded 33 shots and 15 penalty corners, to just three shots and one corner for the Hawks. Four different players scored for Syracuse, including sophomore midfielder Leonie Geyer, senior forward Heather Susek, junior back Amy Kee and senior midfielder Nicole Nelson.
The Orange opened the scoring flood gates at 22:29 as Geyer took the ball baseline and beat Monmouth goalkeeper, Teresa Mathews, on the right side to give Syracuse a 1-0 advantage.
Susek would give SU a 2-0 lead going into the locker room. The senior took a great baseline pass from junior forward Kelsey Millman and put the ball in the back of an empty cage.
Kee scored Syracuse's third goal of the day, converting on an Orange corner. Senior midfielder Liz McInerney provided the push and senior midfielder Martina Loncarica the stop. Kee took the pass from Loncarica and sent a blast to the right side of the cage. It was Loncarica's 118th point, two shy of tying Maggie Befort as the all-time leading scoring.
Nelson's goal put a cap on the scoring at 42:41. The senior put home a rebound created by another SU corner.
Syracuse begins a four-game road swing at No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday, September 2. Faceoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
