SYRACUSE – The fifth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team score five goals in the second half to cage the 19th-ranked Princeton Tigers, 5-0, this afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The victory, which is SU's 19th consecutive at home, improved the Orange to 5-2. The Tigers moved to 2-4.
The floodgates opened after Syracuse was awarded a penalty stroke at 54:45. Senior midfielder Martina Loncarica increased her school record point total to 123 on the stroke, her second of the year.
Senior forward Heather Susek scored five minutes later off a rebound from a Loncarica blast, giving the Orange a 2-0 advantage.
Junior forward Kelsey Millman tallied her team-best tying fifth goal of the season just two minutes later, taking a baseline pass from sophomore midfielder Leonie Geyer.
Geyer found the back of the cage three minutes after. The sophomore made a brilliant move in the circle and beat Princeton goalkeeper, Christina Maida, to give SU a 4-0 lead at 64:21.
Freshman forward Lauren Brooks added the last goal of the day. The freshman dove and got her stick on a pass from sophomore back Laura Hahnefeldt, deflecting it top self for her first career goal.
The Orange outshot the Tigers, 15-3, and held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Leann Stiver made two saves en route to her third shutout of the season.
Syracuse returns to BIG EAST action when it travels to the Derby City to face Louisville on Friday, September 23 at 3 p.m.
