Match Notes
TAMPA, Fla. – The Syracuse University tennis team opens the 2012 campaign on Saturday morning against No. 42 South Florida at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts in Tampa, Fla.
Head coach Luke Jensen begins his sixth season at the helm of the Orange tennis program with the highest winning percent of any tennis coach in SU history. With an overall record of 77-40, Jensen boasts a .685 winning percentage. He has compiled a record of 39-10 in the past two seasons, including a mark of 19-7 last season.
Seniors Emily Harman and Alessondra Parra lead the way into South Florida. Harman is the newest member of the century club, earning her 100th career victory with her last win of the season against St. John's last year. Parra currently has 84 wins.
Sophomores Maddie Kobelt and Aleah Marrow each tallied over 30 wins as freshmen and should stabilize the middle of the Orange lineup as sophomores.
Jensen added five freshmen to his roster to fill voids left by the three graduated seniors. Breanna Bachini, Anika Novacek, Amanda Rodgers, Komal Safdar and Jimena Wu will round out the Orange roster.
USF is ranked 42nd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Top 75 poll. The Bulls' Ecaterina Vasenina is the 48th ranked singles player in the nation. The Orange has never beaten South Florida in six tries and was knocked out of the BIG EAST Tournament last season by USF.
First serve in Tampa is set for 10:00 a.m. Following the match with USF, the Orange travels to Fort Worth, Texas, for a contest with No. 51 TCU on Jan. 21.
