SU Continues Homestand vs. No. 3 Cornell

The Syracuse ice hockey team returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion to host No. 3 Cornell on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. SU recently earned a point in CHA play against No. 5 Mercyhurst in the back-end of a two-game set on Jan. 6-7, the first point for the Orange against the Lakers in program history. Cornell defeated Syracuse earlier this season, 9-2 at Lynah Rink in Ithaca. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored a shorthanded goal and Margot Scharfe added a power play goal for SU.
Storylines Vs. The Big Red
Cornell visits Tennity Ice Pavilion ending a stretch of four games in eight days with wins coming against Rensselaer, Colgate, Quinnipiac and Princeton. Syracuse is 1-2-0 all-time against the Big Red, including a 2-1 overtime victory on January 5, 2010 when the Big Red was ranked eighth in the country. The Big Red averages 5.24 goals per game this season (best in the NCAA), while their power play unit is clicking at 29% (2nd in the nation).
The Big Red has three of the nation's top-ten leading scorers this season in Brianne Jenner (eight goals, 23 assists), Jillian Saulnier (15 goals, 13 assists) and Rebecca Johnston (11 goals, 17 assists). Saulnier also leads the country in points per game among rookies. On the blueline, Laura Fortino leads the nation in points per game for a defenseman with 1.27 on four goals and 15 assists.
Cornell's two goaltenders (Amanda Mazzotta and Lauren Slebodnick) have each played in nine games this season, posting records of 7-2-0 and 8-0-0, respectively. Slebodnick leads the nation with a 1.10 goals against average, while Mazzotta trails close behind in 10th with a 1.98 GAA.
Up Next: Niagara
Syracuse will close its five-game homestand on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (2:00 p.m.) as the Orange welcome Niagara to Tennity Ice Pavilion for a two-game set. SU is 8-5-2 all-time against the Purple Eagles, including a win in last year's CHA Semifinals that propelled Syracuse into the conference championship game for the second straight season.
This weekend will be Syracuse's 'Skate for the Cure' weekend at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The conference wide event, currently in its sixth season, will collect proceeds to fund breast cancer research. This season's recipient is the American Cancer Society.
Last Time Out: SU Earns First Ever Point Vs. No. 5 Mercyhurst
Syracuse went 0-1-1 against No. 5 Mercyhurst last weekend at Tennity Ice Pavilion, dropping an 8-4 game Friday and earning a 1-1 tie on Saturday.
Kelley Steadman netted a hat trick for the Lakers on Friday, and four different Orange players tallied goals, including assistant captain Jacquie Greco's first of the season. SU trailed 4-2 after the first period before Mercyhurst continued its offensive attack during the final 40 minutes. Shiann Darkangelo added one goal and one assist for SU. On Saturday, Lisa Mullan gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead late in the third period and Kallie Billadeau made 33 saves, including 26 straight to end the game, to earn the Orange one point on the weekend. SU was 0-15-0 all-time against Mercyhurst entering Saturday's contest.
Production On The Penalty Kill
Syracuse is 22nd in the country in penalty killing this season, successfully killing of 92 of the team's 111 penalties (82.9%) through 23 games this season.
The Orange has one shorthanded goal this season, coming from Holly Carrie-Mattimoe in the second period at No. 2 Cornell on Nov. 1. During the past eight games, the SU penalty killing squad is 39-of-44 (.886), including a string 16 straight from the second period at Robert Morris on Dec. 9 to the third period at Colgate on Jan. 2.
Dominating The Faceoff Circle
Through 23 games this season, the Orange has won 52.3% of its faceoffs (696-of-1331). SU has either matched or exceeded its opponents' faceoff wins in 15 of the team's 23 games this season, including each of the last seven. In Syracuse's eight wins this season, the Orange has won 53.2% (235-of-437) of its draws. Leading the way for SU in the faceoff circle in 2011-12 is freshman Shiann Darkangelo, who has won 57% of her draws (242-of-422).
Greco Serves As A Versatile Weapon
Junior Jacquie Greco has played in 18 games this season for the Orange, and has displayed the ability to play both as a forward and back as a defensemen. Greco stepped in as a winger for SU when senior Lisa Mullan went down with an injury early in the season, and has since moved back to defense during Mullan's return.
In two-plus seasons with Syracuse, the assistant captain has played in 74 games, posting two goals and two assists. On Jan. 6 against No. 5 Mercyhurst, she potted her first goal of the season on a bullet from the blue line with SU on the power play.
