SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- No. 3 Cornell (16-2-0) used a three-goal third period to skate to a 6-3 win against the SU ice hockey team (8-14-2) on Tuesday night a Tennity Ice Pavilion, 6-3. The Orange received goals from three different scorers, while Kallie Billadeau made 28 saves in goal. Syracuse will return to the ice this weekend as SU hosts Niagara during the 'Skate for the Cure' weekend, beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
Cornell outshot the Orange 34-24 for the game and SU won 35-of-67 draws. Shiann Darkangelo led the charge for SU with a 21-of-30 performance in the faceoff circle. Syracuse also went 2-of-8 on the power play, while the Big Red was 1-of-6.
After battling through the first ten minutes of the game, Nicole Ferrara put the Orange on top with 7:47 left in the first period when she deflected a Margot Scharfe shot from the right side for her third goal of the season. Cornell would answer right back, however, as Rebecca Johnston netted her 12th of the season when she took a shot from the left faceoff dot that found its way through traffic and over the shoulder of Billadeau for the score.
Holly Carrie-Mattimoe netted her team-leading 10th goal of the season with SU on the power play late in the second period when she took a long pass from Jordyn Burns and rocketed a shot under the cross bar. The goal was Carrie-Mattimoe's 15th career power play tally, tying Julie Rising's school record.
The Big Red would respond just 1:43 later with the tying goal as Brianne Jenner went from forehand to backhand, slipping the puck past Billadeau for her ninth of the season. Cornell then took its first lead of the night with 1:08 left in the frame as Johnston picked up her second of the night with a backhand top shelf.
Chelsea Karpenko gave the Big Red a two-goal edge four minutes into the third period with a slap shot for her 14th goal of the season before Erin Barley-Mahoney made it 5-2 just 15 seconds later when she took a feed from Jillian Saulnier (three assists), and Barley-Mahoney slipped the puck five-hole for her third goal of the season.
Scharfe brought the Orange within two six minutes into the stanza with a shot from in tight for her eighth of the season.
Billadeau kept the Orange in the game, and thwarted a penalty shot from Saulnier near the midway mark of the period. Catherine White ended any hopes of a comeback, however, with a backhand shot over Billadeau with 1:21 left in regulation to seal the victory.
