The Syracuse ice hockey team closes its five-game homestand this weekend as the Orange return to conference play against Niagara, beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m. SU will be hosting its fourth annual ‘Skate for the Cure’ against the Purple Eagles this weekend, which raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The Orange will be wearing pink jerseys during both games in support of the event.

Orange Goes Pink
With the sixth annual CHA ‘Skate for the Cure’ coming up this weekend, the Orange will be wearing pink jerseys for both games against Niagara to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Throughout the weekend, a silent auction will be held in the lobby at Tennity Ice Pavilion for a chance to take home one of the game-worn jerseys. The starting bid on every jersey will be $125, with a Buy Now option for $250. This season, all proceeds from the weekend will go to the American Cancer Society. The Orange recently held a successful raffle at the Syracuse Crunch game on Dec. 28 for a jersey and two hockey sticks.

Storylines Vs. The Purple Eagles
The Purple Eagles hold an overall record of 7-11-5, and 0-2-0 in CHA play. Niagara is currently on a five game losing streak, falling to Ohio State, Clarkson and finally to No. 5/5 Mercyhurst. Syracuse is 8-5-2 all-time against Niagara. Josh Sciba leads the Purple Eagles this season in his first season as head coach. Also new to the team is freshman goalie Abby Ryplanski, who is ranked 20th in the nation with a 2.37 goals against average and 24th in save percentage with a .911 clip.

Sophomore forward Jessica Hitchcock leads the offense this season with 11 goals and 6 assists. She is one of four Niagara players with double-digit points this season. Kelsey Welch (eight goals, seven assists), Jenna Hendrikx (six goals, nine assists) and Kaleigh Chippy (five goals, seven assists) are the others.

As a team, Niagara is 19th in the nation on penalty kill, as they have successfully killed off 99 of their 118 penalties (83.9). Syracuse will make the return trip to Niagara on Feb. 24-25 for two 2:00 p.m. contests.

Up Next: Quinnipiac
Syracuse will head back out on the road for two games against Quinnipiac next weekend in Hamden, Conn. Friday’s game will begin at 7:00 p.m. while Saturday’s contest is slated for 2:00 p.m. Quinnipiac leads the all-time series with the Orange, 3-1-0, with the last meeting coming on Jan. 16, 2010, a 2-1 loss for SU. The Bobcats will be off this weekend after splitting pair of weekend games at Cornell (L, 1-4) and Colgate (W, 4-1).

Last Time Out: Three-Goal Third Lifts No. 3 Cornell Past SU
No. 3 Cornell (16-2-0) used a three-goal third period to skate to a 6-3 win against the SU ice hockey team (8-14-2) on Tuesday night a Tennity Ice Pavilion, 6-3. The Orange received goals from three different scorers, while Kallie Billadeau made 28 saves in goal.

Cornell outshot the Orange 34-24 for the game and SU won 35-of-67 draws. Shiann Darkangelo led the charge for SU with a 21-of-30 performance in the faceoff circle. Syracuse also went 2-of-8 on the power play, while the Big Red was 1-of-6.

Carrie-Mattimoe Ties Rising's Power Play Goal Record
Junior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season on Tuesday against No. 3 Cornell, and her fifth power play tally. Carrie-Mattimoe now has 15 career power play goals in her three seasons with the Orange, which ties Julie Rising’s school record. Carrie-Mattimoe is tied for 12th in the nation, and tied for fourth in the conference.
