SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Orange ice hockey team scored twice in a span of 57 seconds with less than four minutes remaining in regulation, and Niagara potted the tying score with 39 seconds left to earn a 3-3 draw on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Three Orange scored for SU (8-14-3, 0-2-3 CHA), while Jenesica Drinkwater made 21 saves in goal. The two teams will meet in the weekend finale on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. during the 'Skate for the Cure.'
The Orange held a 34-24 edge in shots, including a 13-1 mark in the first period. Niagara was 1-of-5 on the power play while SU went 1-of-6.
Although Syracuse outshot the Purple Eagles 13-1 during the first period, many of SU's best scoring opportunities came late in the period. With less than four minutes left in the frame, the Orange began a flurry of eight straight shot attempts (four on goal). SU nearly took a 1-0 advantage during the string as Kaillie Goodnough's initial shot from the point was turned away by Abby Ryplanski. Margot Scharfe then gathered the rebound in front of the crease and tried to tuck it under the right pad, but Ryplanski was able to hold on.
The Niagara offense woke up in the second period, potting two goals on 12 shots, including the game's first tally just 57 seconds into the stanza. Kaleigh Chippy picked up her sixth goal of the season after taking a pass from Kelsey Gunn and depositing a shot from in tight into the back of the cage.
The Purple Eagles took a two-goal lead with 8:32 left in the frame on a goal from Kayla Rawiwsky on a two-on-one with Chippy. After Rawiwsky head-manned the puck up to Chippy, Chippy then returned the puck back to Rawiwsky, who deeked past Drinkwater for the score.
Scharfe cut the deficit to one with 3:57 left in the period when she gathered a rebound from a Goodnough shot, and hammered it home for her ninth of the season.
Drinkwater kept SU in the game throughout the third period, making seven saves, highlighted by a glove save on Kalli Funk midway through the frame. The Orange would knot the score at two with 3:20 left in regulation as Allie LaCombe scored seventh of the season on a slap shot that squeaked through the pads of Sarah Moses, who replaced Ryplanski at the start of the period.
Syracuse would take its first lead of the game 57 seconds later on Shiann Darkangelo's third of the season on a wrist shot that got under the glove of Morris.
The lead wouldn't last for long, however, as Jenna Hendrikx scored her seventh of the season with Morris pulled in favor of the extra skater. She took a pass from Kristi Richards from behind the net and buried it over the shoulder of Drinkwater.
SU carried the tempo of play in overtime, and nearly scored on a two-on-one late the extra frame, which resulted in a Syracuse power play with 11 seconds left.
