SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University tennis team (1-2) registered its first win of the season in dominant fashion as the Orange swept St. John's (0-1), 7-0, on Friday evening at Drumlins Tennis Center.
SU opened the evening by sweeping doubles to earn a 1-0 advantage heading into singles. Amanda Rodgers and Alessondra Parra got SU started with an 8-1 victory against SJU's Thomas/Pogirbnyak on court three. Maddie Kobelt and Aleah Marrow followed that up by defeating Austin/Firat 8-3 on court two.
Emily Harman and Komal Safdar rounded out doubles with a narrow 8-6 triumph on court one against the duo of Adams/Selakovic.
SU breezed through singles as well, winning all six matches in straight sets. Kobelt was the first to finish in third singles as she had little trouble with Diamond Adams, winning 6-0, 6-2. Safdar then took care of business in second singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Zwirbulis.
Marrow then topped Pogirbnyak on court five with a decisive 6-0, 6-2 win, while on court one Harman defeated SJU's Selakovic 6-2, 6-3.
Courts four and six rounded out the action as Rodgers defeated Austin in sixth singles (6-3, 6-2) and Parra topped Adams on court four, 6-0, 6-1.
Syracuse won 72 games in singles, compared to just 18 for the Red Storm. Marrow, Parra and Safdar each collected their first singles victories of the season.
“It was the best match we have played this year. We had a fast start and a solid finish,” head coach Luke Jensen said. “I am really happy with everything we have been doing with the speed training and the power training. It is working.”
The Orange has a quick turnaround as SU travels to face the Buffalo Bulls on Sunday morning. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m.
