SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 2012 volleyball season featured several program milestones as the Orange hosted two matches in the Carrier Dome for the first time in program history, under the leadership of first-year head coach Leonid Yelin.
The Orange opened the 2012 campaign with the Colgate Classic title, after sweeping the competition for a 3-0 start to the season. After tough losses in the Bluejay Invitational, SU posted a 3-2 victory against No. 18 Iowa State in the final day of the Iowa State Tournament, marking the first time the Orange has beaten a ranked opponent in program history.
After a second place finish in the Blue and White Classic, the Orange headed into conference play. Despite picking up two conference wins against Villanova and Seton Hall in the last two matches of the season, the Orange narrowly missed the BIG EAST Tournament, finishing 4-11 in the conference.
The freshman class played an important role in the Orange's offensive and defensive attack in 2012.
Standout freshman outside hitter, Silvi Uattara garnered her first all-conference honor after being selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Uattara led the team with 258 kills in 2012, averaging 3.58 kills per set. The two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week hit double-digit kills in 17 of 27 matches with the Orange in 2012, posting 20 or more kills in five matches.
In addition to Uattara's two BIG EAST weekly awards, freshman middle blocker Monika Salkute was named BIG EAST Freshman of the week following a career-high effort in the season finale match against Seton Hall. Salkute recorded a career-high 13 blocks against the Pirates, including 12 block assists and one solo block.
Gosia Wlaszczuk finished third on the team in assists (113). Wlaszczuk also recorded 146 digs and 132 kills for the Orange in her rookie season. Valeriya Shaipova did not see any action in 2012, but will return next year as an offensive weapon ready to attack and block at the net.
Syracuse also saw leadership on the court and off the court from senior co-captains Samantha Hinz, Laura Homann and Zoe Guzman, led by Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, Samantha Hinz.
Hinz ended her career with 444 total blocks, adding 103 blocks to her total in 2012. Homann ended her career after an injury sidelined her for the season following the match against Illinois-Chicago. Guzman played in 22 matches for the Orange, recorded four starts at the libero position. She ended her career with a career-high 31 digs against Seton Hall on senior day.
While the Orange will say goodbye to three seniors, a solid group will return next season to compete for the conference title in 2013.
