SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 73 Syracuse University tennis team (7-3) won its 26th consecutive match at Drumlins Tennis Club with a 4-3 victory against Rutgers (4-2) on Sunday morning.
The win was SU's fifth in a row and the Orange has now been victorious in seven of its last eight contests. The Orange is also 3-1 against BIG EAST competition.
With SU winning doubles on court three, and Rutgers winning on court one, it came down to Maddie Kobelt and Aleah Marrow on court two. The duo, now 7-3 on the season together, was able to outlast RU's Balasa/Jedeh 9-7 to earn SU a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
Amanda Rodgers blanked Noor Jedeh in fifth singles 6-0, 6-0 for SU's second point, while Kobelt had little trouble with Morgan Ivey on court two, 6-1, 6-2.
Emily Harman, the No. 93 singles player in the country, secured the victory for SU by winning on court one 6-3, 6-3 against Jennifer Holzberg. With the match in hand for Syracuse, Rutgers won the final three singles matches on courts three, four and six for their three tallies.
Harman and Rodgers now share a team-best 9-1 singles record and Harman is currently on a nine match winning streak. Kobelt and Marrow have a team-best mark of 7-3 in doubles.
“With these conference games, we know them, they know us, and it is personal,” head coach Luke Jensen said. “We still need to start playing better. It is nice to come out with two wins this weekend, but we need to be more consistent.
“We are going to have a great week of practice to prepare for the biggest home weekend we have had here in six years.”
The Orange is back in action next weekend at Drumlins with two more matches against nationally-ranked opponents. SU and No. 60 William & Mary square off on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6:00 p.m., followed by a match with No. 25 Yale on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 9:00 a.m.
