SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Aleah Marrow clinched a 4-3 victory against No. 25 Yale (7-2) for the Syracuse University tennis team (8-4, 3-1 BIG EAST) at the Drumlins Tennis Club on Sunday, Feb. 26. The biggest win in program history closes a weekend in which the Orange hosted two nationally-ranked opponents for the first time.
Knotted up at 3-3, the match came down to court six as Marrow went to a third set with Bulldogs freshman Amber Li. The Durham native stormed to a 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker in the final set to seal the victory for Syracuse.
The Orange also recorded victories in first, fourth, and fifth singles. No. 93 senior Emily Harman rallied to win the final three games of the second set, to defeat junior Elizabeth Epstein, 6-2, 7-5. Freshman Amanda Rodgers won her tenth consecutive singles match, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Alessondra Parra also scored a win, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
In the doubles competition, Yale boasted three nationally-ranked pairs. The senior duo of Harman and Parra defeated No. 27 Vicky Brook and Hanna Yu, 8-3, in first doubles. With the third doubles pair suffering an 8-4 setback, it all came down to second doubles. Sophomores Maddie Kobelt and Marrow had the match knotted up at 5-5, but lost the final three games.
The Orange tennis team returns to action next weekend as it travel to BIG EAST foes, West Virginia and Pittsburgh.
