
Orange Meets Mercyhurst In CHA Playoffs

After snapping a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime victory at Niagara last weekend, the Syracuse ice hockey team will look to build off that momentum as the team travels to Moon Township, Pa. for the 2012 CHA Playoffs this weekend. The Orange will battle regular season champion Mercyhurst on Friday at 12:00 p.m. Robert Morris, the host of the tournament, will faceoff with Niagara in the second semifinal game at 3:45 p.m., with the winners advancing to Saturday's championship game at 3:00 p.m. All games will be played at Clearview Arena.
Syracuse In The CHA Tournament
Syracuse is making its fourth straight appearance in the conference tournament this weekend. The Orange has advanced to the CHA Championship game in each of the past two seasons, eventually losing to nine-time league champion Mercyhurst. The Orange is 2-3 all-time in the league tournament.
SU finished the regular season in fourth place in the CHA standings with a 1-8-3 record, good for five league points. Mercyhurst, the regular season champion, was 8-1-3 in conference play. Robert Morris locked up the No. 2 seed with a 6-3-3 mark while Niagara secured the No. 3 seed at 3-6-3.
Storylines Vs. No. 6/6 Mercyhurst
Syracuse has never defeated Mercyhurst, which owns a 17-0-1 record in the all-time series. The Orange picked up its first-ever point against the Lakers on Jan. 7 in a 1-1 tie at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Mercyhurst, the CHA regular season champion, comes into Friday's game with the third highest scoring offense in the nation at 4.65 goals per game. The Lakers boast two players in the top-ten in scoring nationally this season in Bailey Bram (26 goals, 40 assists) and Christine Bestland (22 goals, 33 assists), while Kelley Steadman is second nationally in goals per game with 32 tallies this season.
Hillary Pattenden has seen a majority of the team in goal for Mercyhurst this season, posting a 2.04 goals against average and .921 save percentage along with a 19-6-3 record. The Laker power play unit is operating at 29% this season, the highest in the nation with 45 goals on the man advantage.

NU downed Syracuse in overtime on Friday in overtime, 3-2, securing SU's fourth place finish in the conference standings before the Orange bounced back with a 2-1 OT win to snap a five game losing streak. On Friday, Syracuse allowed a power play goal just 1:37 into overtime in a 3-2 setback Sophomore goalkeeper Kallie Billadeau (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded 31 saves for the Orange. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Margot Scharfe each scored for the Orange.
On Saturday, Nicole Ferrara scored her third game-winning goal of the season in overtime to lift SU past the Purple Eagles, 2-1. Shiann Darkangelo also scored for Syracuse, while Jenesica Drinkwater made 24 saves.
