CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Orange softball team (11-8) went 1-1 on the second day of competition at the USF Under Armour Invite on Saturday, March 10. In the first game, Boston University defeated SU, 1-0. Syracuse rebounded in its second game, scoring an 8-1 victory against Kennesaw State.
“We were looking to take the pressure off them in the second game,” said head coach Leigh Ross. “In the second game, we switched up the lineup and a lot of kids stepped up. We got runs from the bottom of the order, which was great to see.”
Game One:
Boston University took an early lead in the top half of the first inning and held off the Orange en route to a 1-0 victory. Sophomore Amy Ekart recorded the lone RBI for the Terriers. Junior Whitney Tuthill allowed four hits over seven innings for BU. Syracuse freshman Lindsay Taylor gave up four hits and struck out four in a complete game effort.
In the top of the first inning, Boston University sophomore Megan Volpano singled to left field. Fielding the ball, Orange freshman Julie Wambold bobbled it and Volpano advanced to second base. Ekart would then single and Volpano would score from first.
BU would not reach first base for the next four innings due to the stellar pitching of Taylor. The SU rookie struck out three over that span.
The Orange had several opportunities to tally a run in the late innings. In the bottom of the fourth, sophomore Jasmine Watson grounded into a double play, which ended a Syracuse threat. In the sixth inning, senior Lacey Kohl grounded out to the pitcher with a runner on third, to end another scoring chance and the inning.
SU had one final chance after Wambold reached first on an error by the shortstop with one out in the final inning. Junior Veronica Grant subbed in as a pinch runner for Wambold. Grant was caught stealing second base and freshman Carey-Leigh Thomas grounded out to end the game.
Game Two:
Syracuse dominated throughout the entirety of the game, to earn an 8-1 victory against Kennesaw State. Six members of the Orange recorded an RBI, with Thomas leading the way with two.
The Orange did not hesitate and jumped out to an early advantage. In the top of the first, with runners on first and second and two outs, Thomas sent a fly ball to right field. A dropped ball by the right fielder resulted in two runs scored and a 2-0 SU lead.
