Eight Orange Earn NFHCA Academic Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In addition to earning a team grade point average above 3.0 for the 2011 fall semester, eight members of the Syracuse field hockey team were named to the 2011 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 of higher through the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.
Junior midfielder Haley Bomboy, freshman forward Lauren Brooks, sophomore back Laura Hahnefeldt, junior back Iona Holloway, junior forward Kelsey Millman, sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Openshaw, senior forward Heather Susek and senior back Erika Wachter all represented the Orange on the National Academic Squad
This marks the fifth straight season at the Orange has placed at least eight student-athletes on the national academic squad, including a record 11 student-athletes in 2008. Wachter is one of only 92 student-athletes to earn the honor in four straight seasons, while Holloway and Millman were named to the list for the third straight season.
As a team, SU was named as one of 60 institutions NCAA Division I programs to earn the National Academic Team Award. The Orange is one of six BIG EAST programs included on the list.
The Orange was 19-4 last season, winning the BIG EAST Tournament Championship for the second straight year. Under the direction of head coach Ange Bradley, SU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and had a perfect 13-0 record at home in J.S. Coyne Stadium.
