BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Jasmine Watson hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Syracuse softball team (14-8) to a 2-0 win against Jacksonville (15-11) in the first game of the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton on Friday, March 16. With the victory, head coach Leigh Ross collected her 400th win of her coaching career.
“400 wins is a great milestone,” said Ross. “I am very proud of all my players because they did this, not me. Today, Jenna Caira was unbelievable and we played great defense. Jasmine Watson stuck to the plan and came through for us in the end.”
With senior Lacy Kohl on first base and two outs, Watson came up to bat. Watson turned on the pitch and sent it soaring over the left field fence to put the Orange on the board. The home run was Watson's fourth of the year.
The Dolphins gave it their all in the final inning. With two outs, back-to-back singles would give Jacksonville runners on first and second base. Caira struck out Kayla Ouellet to preserve the win for SU.
The game was a pitcher's duel throughout. Between the two teams, there were five hits and 17 strikeouts. Syracuse did not record its first hit until the fifth inning, while Jacksonville got their first hit until the sixth.
Caira recorded a complete game shutout. The Toronto native gave up three hits and struck out nine. With the victory, she improves to 11-3 on the season and recorded her eighth straight win.
SU is back in action on Saturday, March 17 in the second day of the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament. The Orange opens with a rematch against the Dolphins at 10 a.m. Following their first game, Syracuse will take on host Florida Atlantic.
Fans will be able to follow a live blog and live statistics for both games. Live audio will available for the Florida Atlantic game.
