BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Orange softball team (16-8) won both games on the second day of the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton on Saturday, March 17. In its first game, SU defeated Jacksonville (16-12), 2-1, then scored a 10-2 decision against host Florida Atlantic (10-20) in its second game.
Game One:
In its rematch against the Dolphins, the Orange built an early advantage and held on for a 2-1 victory. Senior Lisaira Daniels and freshman Carey-Leigh Thomas each recorded an RBI. Senior pitcher Jenna Caira picked up the win to improve her record to 12-3 on the year. Caira has won her last eight decisions.
Syracuse took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After a double by junior Veronica Grant, Daniels hit a single to score Grant. Later in the inning, with runners on first and second, Thomas hit a double down the left field line to tally another run for the Orange.
Jacksonville cut into SU's lead in the fourth inning. Ronnie Gajownik hit a deep double to left center to score one runner, but that would be all for the Dolphins.
Freshman Lindsay Taylor came in to relieve starter Jenna Caira in the fifth inning. The rookie recorded her first save of the season in three innings of work. She did not surrender a hit.
Game Two:
After falling behind early, the Orange scored the next 10 runs en route to a 10-2 rout against Florida Atlantic. SU recorded 14 hits and eight players had at least one RBI. Every batter in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit, as well.
Freshman Julie Wambold led the way with three hits and two RBIs. Daniels also batted in two runs.
Syracuse fell in an early hole against the host Owls. In the second inning, Florida Atlantic jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a two-run home run by Stephanie Call.
SU did not hesitate and responded quickly. With runners on first and second base, sophomore Shirley Daniels hit a single to score one and cut FAU's lead to 2-1. The Orange took the lead for good in the fourth. A solo-home run by Thomas and Grant single would give the team a 3-2 advantage.
Over the next three innings, Syracuse would add seven runs to its lead. Lisaira Daniels, Lacy Kohl, Wambold, and Stephanie Watts all recorded an RBI in that span. Freshman Mary Dombrowski tallied her first career RBI on a sacrifice fly in the final inning.
Junior pitcher Stacy Kuwik brought her record to 3-3 on the year with the win. In four innings of work, Kuwik struck out seven and gave up two runs. Caira and Taylor pitched the final three innings, combining to not allow one hit.
Syracuse is back on the field on Sunday, March 18 in the final day of the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament. The Orange closes the tournament with a rematch against the host Owls at 11:00 a.m. Fans will be able to follow a live audio, blog, and statistics for both games.
