SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It will be a home opener like none other in Syracuse University softball program history on Friday night when the 24th-ranked Orange hosts the 'Duel in the Dome.' For the first time in the history of the legendary building, the Dome turf will be set up as a softball diamond. The 'Duel in the Dome' features Syracuse, Colgate and Canisius, in addition to the Syracuse University Softball Team Camp and a Little League baseball game.
The Carrier Dome, which has hosted athletic events, including football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey and track & field meets, along with concerts, commencement and monster trucks, will add softball to the list of special guests this weekend. The Syracuse softball team will face Colgate on Friday, March 23 (7:00 p.m., Time Warner Cable Sports) and Canisius on Saturday, March 26 (6:00 p.m.). In addition, several area high schools will participate in the Syracuse University Team Camp in the Dome on Friday and Saturday surrounding the collegiate games. A Little League game featuring Liverpool and CNS under-12 teams kicks off the action on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.
“It is a great opportunity to hold a game indoors and this is going to help us in the future to have a couple of more home games every year,” said SU head coach Leigh Ross. “I also think it is a neat experience for the community for them to view softball in this setting. Everyone involved has gone above and beyond and this is going to be a great event.”
Home plate will be set up near the 50-yard line and for the first time in its history the Carrier Dome will have foul poles. Fans are invited to sit along the third base line (the south side of the Dome), directly behind where each team will be seated.
Ross has elevated the Orange to a top-25 program since being named head coach in 2006 and has led the Orange to the past two NCAA Tournaments. The 2012 Orange is riding a seven game-winning streak. It has already been a season full of program firsts, and playing a game in the Carrier Dome is another for the program which is in its 12th year.
“We are excited to play a home game this early in the season and especially at a landmark like the Carrier Dome. It is going to be great for our program,” said Orange first baseman Kelly Saco.
The high school teams scheduled for the team camp include: Baldwinsville, Caravel, Cazenovia, Cicero-North Syracuse, Corcoran, Fayetteville-Manlius, Henninger, IHA, Liverpool, Oswego, Phoenix and West Genesee.
Tickets for each day $5 and parking is available in the Carrier Dome west lots for $5. Fans should enter the Carrier Dome via Gates A, B, C and E. Dome concession stands will be open. Fans who wish to leave the Dome and return for games later the same day will be provided re-entry passes.
