Women's Crew Heads To Indy For BIG EAST Double Dual

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse women's crew, in its final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships, will race against some conference foes in Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday for the BIG EAST Double Dual. The regatta features the Orange, No. 15 Notre Dame, RV Louisville, Rutgers, West Virginia, as well as Iowa.
Justin Moore's Orange will race its first and second varsity eights, as well as its first and second varsity fours. The regatta will consist of morning heats and petite and grand finals in the afternoon. The day begins with V8 heats at 8:30 a.m. and 8:40 a.m., followed by 2V8 heats at 8:50 and 9:00, V4 at 9:10 and 9:20, 2V4 at 9:30 and 9:40, and 3V8/N8 at 9:50.
Finals begin at 11:30 with the V8s and the final race of the day is slated for 1:10 p.m.
The races will take place on the 2,000-meter course at the Indianapolis Rowing Center on Eagle Creek Reservoir.
SU's varsity eight is coming off a strong performance against stiff competition at the Charles River Challenge on April 14. The Orange V8, coxed by senior Allison Todd, finished third in a time of 7:01.1 behind No. 12 Radcliffe (6:56.8) and No. 20 Dartmouth (6:58.2).
“Despite the loss, I believe this was a breakthrough race for the team,” Moore said. “This week was the first time in my tenure at Syracuse that I have seen our crew have a very effective change of speed in the middle of the race. Our crew is very young, the lineup consists of three seniors, three sophomores and three first-years, to be able to race so well against top 20 competition is very exciting.”
The Fighting Irish are coming off a three-race sweep last weekend against Stanford and USC in Redwood Shores, Calif. Notre Dame's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four (BIG EAST Boat of the Week) all logged wins.
Louisville last raced on April 14 in Marina Del Rey, Calif., losing to No. 4 UCLA in three races, varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four, all by open water margins.
Rutgers is coming off competing at the Knecht Cup in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Scarlet Knights' varsity eight finished third behind Duke and Holy Cross in their heat, finished sixth in the semis and finished second in the Third Level Finals. The Orange faced Rutgers at the James A. Ten Eyck Boathouse on March 31, with Su winning the lone head-to-head matchup, the varsity eight consolation, by 13.8 seconds.
West Virginia rowed against Dayton last weekend, beating the Flyers in the varsity eight and second varsity eight, and losing in the varsity four and second varsity four.
Iowa, the lone non-BIG EAST crew at the regatta, is coming off wins in the V8, 2V8, V4 and 2V4 over Alabama.
The 2012 BIG EAST Championship is May 12-13 in Mercer, N.J.
