SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A 10-run fourth inning propelled the Syracuse University softball team (24-9, 5-1) past Seton Hall (18-21, 0-8) by a score of 12-1 on Saturday at the SU Softball Complex.
The Orange swept the three game set with the Pirates and has now been victorious in 14 of its last 15 contests. The 11 run margin of victory was SU's largest of the season.
Jasmine Watson led the charge with a 2-for-3 effort at the dish, four runs batted in and one run scored. Carey-Leigh Thomas smacked her team-high eighth home run to lead off the fourth inning.
Seton Hall jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning, and was threatening to tack on more runs as the Pirates loaded the bases in both the second and third inning. Jenna Caira would end SHU's rallies with timely strikeouts on her way to pitching four innings with five strikeouts in the win. She improved her record to 16-3 and has not lost since the end of February.
Watson gave Syracuse the lead in the bottom of the third inning by plating Morgan Nandin and Stephanie Watts with a two out single.
Thomas then started the 10-run fourth inning with a leadoff long ball to right center field. The Orange sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored those 10 runs on seven hits, including a span of eight straight players reaching base safely. Watson and Shirley Daniels each had two-run doubles, while Thomas also added a two-run single in her second plate appearance of the inning.
“We did what we needed to do with clutch hits yesterday. Today was nice to finally break it open offensively. I am happy with the wins yesterday, but I am glad that today we broke out. Across the board it was nice to see the kids produce this weekend. Throughout the lineup, a lot of kids stepped up. Jasmine Watson and Shirley Daniels had phenomenal weekends.”
The Orange has seven games this upcoming week with a doubleheader at Cornell on Wednesday followed by a doubleheader at home against Binghamton on Thursday. SU then travels to Notre Dame for a three game set on Saturday and Sunday.
