HANOVER, N.H. - No. 8 Syracuse men's crew swept all four races at No. 15 Dartmouth on Sunday as the Orange successfully defended its Packard Cup title in the final tune-up before the IRA Regatta.
Syracuse, ranked No. 8 in this week's USRowing Collegiate Poll following its grand final appearance at last week's Eastern Sprints, won the varsity eight race on the 2,000-meter Connecticut River course in a time of 5:28.29 while the 15th-ranked Big Green finished in 5:30.90.
“It was a nice gut-check win for us,” Head Coach Dave Reischman said. “I think we came in a little tired and did a good job of grinding through it and getting the win.”
After Dartmouth led the first 800 meters of the race, the Orange came on strong in the third 500 meters, taking the lead and holding it for the duration.
The V8 win secured the Orange the Packard Cup, its second straight and sixth in the last seven years. Syracuse completes its cup season with a 2-1 record as it also won the Conlan Cup on April 21, and has won 19 of its last 24 cup races, dating back to 2006.
SU's V8 consisted of Isaac Budmen (coxswain), Aidan Barrett (stroke), Mike Dietrick (7), Chris Bickford (6), Chris Lutz (5), Mason Leasure (4), Mac Zink (3), James Olson (2) and Jake Martens (bow).
The Orange second varsity eight continued its terrific spring with a 13-second open-water victory over the Big Green. The SU crew, coxed by Matt Cosmann, finished in 5:36.29 while Dartmouth crossed in 5:49.60.
The Orange varsity four rowed to victory in a time 6:27.33 while Dartmouth's V4 finished in 6:30.04.
SU's freshmen eight edged the Big Green frosh at the line in a time of 5:41.15, just a quarter of second ahead of Dartmouth's 5:41.40.
“The frosh was the race of the day,” Reischman said. “Shawn Bagnall has worked hard with them finding a sustainable rhythm and today they nailed it.”
Syracuse concludes its season on May 31-June 2 at the IRA National Championship Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
