Complete 2012 Volleyball Schedule
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - A highly-competitive non-conference schedule, along with the rigorous BIG EAST Conference slate is scheduled for the Syracuse University volleyball team in 2012.
The Orange will be paired against six teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament, including Iowa State who reached the Elite 8 last season and finished eighth nationally, and Kansas State who was a Sweet 16 team and finished ranked No. 22.
“This demanding schedule will help us achieve our goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament,” first year head coach Leonid Yelin said. “Our strong non-conference opponents will boost our strength of schedule and RPI, and it will help the players and coaches find out where we are heading into BIG EAST action.”
The Orange opens the season with four straight tournaments away from Syracuse. Its first is at the Colgate Classic where SU will face the University of Illinois-Chicago, Bryant and the host Raiders on the weekend of Aug. 24-25.
It is then to Omaha, Neb., to participate in the Bluejay Invitational hosted by Creighton. Along with playing the host Bluejays, SU will also be paired against Denver and Kansas State.
Ames, Iowa is the next stop for the Orange as Syracuse partakes in the Iowa State Tournament. The Cyclones, along with Iowa and Eastern Washington are slated for the weekend of Sept. 7-8.
Syracuse then concludes regular-season tournament action at the Blue and White Classic in Buffalo where the Orange will be paired against Hartford, Dartmouth and Buffalo.
SU's first home matches of the season are non-conference contests against Binghamton and Niagara on the 19th and 26th of September. Its BIG EAST home opening weekend comes in the beginning of October against USF and Pittsburgh.
Louisville, the defending BIG EAST regular-season champions, and Cincinnati, the defending BIG EAST Tournament champions invade Syracuse the weekend of Oct. 19-21.
Syracuse wraps up the regular-season with four-straight home matches. SU will host St. John's, Connecticut, Villanova and Seton Hall all in the first two weeks of November.
Pittsburgh will be the site of the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament. It is scheduled to take place Nov. 16-18 at the Fitzgerald Field House. Syracuse was a four-seed in last year's tournament, its highest since 2005.
