CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - United States Field Hockey Olympic Team member and former Syracuse star Shannon Taylor will be in action with Team USA tonight as they kick off a four-match exhibition series with Argentina at the University of Virginia at 8 p.m.
Following Monday's game in Charlottesville, USA and the Argentines will meet again on Wednesday (5 p.m.) and Thursday (8 p.m.) and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. The four-game Olympic preparation concludes on Saturday, June 23 at the National Training Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The 1:30 p.m. game will be televised live nationally on NBC Sports Network.
Taylor, who has been a member of the U.S. National Team since 2010, will become the first Syracuse field hockey alumna to be an Olympian. She is one of 16 players from the 25-member U.S. National Team selected by head coach Lee Bodimeade and his staff for the Olympic Games.
Taylor will make her Olympic debut after being the USA's leading scorer last year and helped the team punch its ticket for London by scoring a goal in its 4-2 victory against Argentina in the finals of the Pan American Games on Oct. 28.
The U.S. will play in a pool made up of No. 2 Argentina, No. 2 Germany, No. 6 New Zealand, No. 7 Australia and No. 12 South Africa. The Americans' first match will be against Germany on Sunday, July 29. After pool play concludes on Aug. 6, semifinal matches will be played on Aug. 8 and the gold-medal match takes place on Aug. 10.
Taylor joined the Senior Women's National Team in 2010 after playing on the Development Team in 2009. She played on the Pan-American Games winning USA squad as well as the second-place Champions Challenge team, both in 2011. Taylor has a total of 56 international caps.
She recently completed play at USA Field Hockey's High Performance National Championship in College Park, Md. Taylor was the tournament's leading scorer with eight goals, playing for the North team along with three current SU players.
