SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team will become the latest Orange squad to make its Carrier Dome debut when it hosts a pair of 2012 BIG EAST Conference matches at the facility in November.
The program's first Dome encounter is set for Sunday, Nov. 4, when the Orange takes on the Connecticut Huskies at 1 p.m. A week later, on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m., Syracuse returns to the Loud House to face Seton Hall in the regular-season finale for both teams.
This is the second time in the span of eight months an SU squad will make its inaugural Dome appearance. In March, the Orange softball team hosted Colgate and Canisius in the "Duel in the Dome," marking the first time softball was played under the building's Teflon roof.
Built in 1979-80, the Carrier Dome is the fifth-largest domed stadium in the United States. It has hosted numerous athletic events in football, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, softball and track & field, along with concerts, commencement activities and monster trucks. On Feb. 27, 2010, an NCAA on-campus record crowd of 34,616 streamed through the building's turnstiles to watch the Orange men's basketball team defeat Villanova.
"There's so much tradition surrounding a place like the Dome and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to play there," said first-year volleyball coach Leonid Yelin.
Yelin takes over a squad that returns 10 letterwinners, including four starters. Leading the way is first-team All-BIG EAST selection Samantha Hinz. Hinz led the BIG EAST in total blocks (169), block assists (143), solo blocks (26), and blocks per set (1.44) in 2011.
The Orange women have a challenging 2012 schedule, consisting of 30 matches, including six against teams that made the 2011 NCAA Tournament. SU kicks off the 2012 campaign Friday, Aug. 24 at the Colgate Classic in Hamilton, N.Y.
