2012 Season Begins with Colgate Classic

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team opens the regular season this weekend, competing in the Colgate Classic in Hamilton, N.Y.
The Orange are kicking off the 2012 campaign on Friday, August 24, facing off against Illinois-Chicago at 4 p.m. SU will return to Colgate on Saturday, August 25 to take on Bryant at 10 a.m., before closing out the weekend against tournament host, Colgate, at 7:30 p.m.
Syracuse returns seven players from 2011, after finishing 19-12 overall and 8-6 in the BIG EAST. Newly appointed head coach Leonid Yelin will lead the Orange this year as the sixth head coach in program history.
Seniors Laura Homann (St. Charles, Ill.) and Samantha Hinz (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) will return to head the Orange offense in 2012. Hinz earned first-team All-BIG EAST honors in 2011, while Homann notched her way to the top of the SU record book with an individual career record of 3,257 assists, after tallying a career high 1,174 assists in 2011. Senior defensive specialist Zoe Guzman (San Juan, Puerto Rico) will also step into a leadership position on the court, replacing starting defensive specialist Ashley Williams, who graduated in 2011.
The Orange will also look for contributions from junior, Lindsay McCabe (Georgetown, Ontario) and sophomores Nicolette Serratore (Oakville, Ontario) and Andrea Fisher (Burlington, Ontario). Last year, McCabe ranked second in the conference in total blocks (132), while setting career highs in kills (265) and blocks (132). After standout rookie seasons, Serratore and Fisher will both add depth to the outside, after combining for a total of 408 kills in 2011.
The first home match will come on Wednesday, September 19, when the Orange host Binghamton in the Women's Building at 7 p.m.
