PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Syracuse picked up its second win of the season against Providence on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Friars by a 4-1 margin. Four different Orange scored goals in the contest and Jenesica Drinkwater made 25 saves in her first appearance of the season.
The Friars had six more shots on goal but SU's 20 were enough to claim victory. Melissa Piacentini recorded two assists in the contest, giving her four on the season.
Syracuse was the first to score when Caitlin Roach scored the first unassisted goal of the season for the Orange. Roach brought the puck from the left face-off circle and past the goalies reach to gain a 1-0 advantage with 6:18 left in the first period.
The Orange used a big second period to secure the win, scoring two goals to take a 3-0 lead going into the final stanza. Allie LaCombe scored the second goal of the game, the eventual game-winner, netting one in a scramble in front of the net on the power play.
Margot Scharfe found her first points of the season soon after LaCombe netted her goal, scoring off a slap shot taken as she won the face-off in the left face-off circle. Melissa Piacentini and Eleanor Haines assisted on the play, helping get the puck to Scharfe in a scramble to win the face-off.
LaCombe and Scharfe scored within three minutes of each other with the game-winner scored at 1:17 and the lead-extender being scored at 3:50 in the second period.
Providence scored a goal 5:15 into the third period to steal the shutout from Drinkwater, when the senior goalie was unable to stop a rebound of a breakaway shot by Brooke Simpson. Allison Micheletti collected the bounce-back and slipped it past Drinkwater to cut the Syracuse lead to two.
Julie Knerr had the final say in the contest, scoring midway through the third stanza to secure the win and end with a score of 4-1. Credit the assists to Akane Hosoyamada and Larissa Martynuik.
The Orange host Boston College and Union on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.), the first all-home weekend of the season.
