CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -Â The Syracuse women's rowing team put in a strong showing in Boston over the weekend at the Head of the Charles, the world's largest two-day regatta. The Orange recorded a fifth-place finish in the champ double and had boats finish ninth and 12th in the champ fours.
Â
The champ double crew of Holly Johnston and Rebecca Soja got the weekend off to a very strong start on Saturday, finishing fifth out of 21 boats in an event open to both collegiate and post-collegiate club rowers. The Orange boat covered the course in 18:30.456, ahead of all other collegiate teams and behind only crews from VST Orca (AUT), London Training Center (CAN), Riverside Boat Club (USA) and Ottawa Rowing Club (CAN). The fifth-place finish automatically qualified the Orange for the event next year.
Â
"It was a good, aggressive row," head coach Justin Moore said. "I was very pleased with how they rowed the early portions of the race course in particular."
Â
In the champ four, Syracuse's "A" boat coxed by Katherine Isaza and rowed by Georgia Hamilton, Chelsea Frawley, Amy Ludovici and Miranda Williams finished ninth out of 21 boats in a time of 19:29.772, which was fifth out of NCAA crews in the event.
Â
The "B" crew coxed by Gillian Carlucci and rowed by Maggie McCrudden, Ailish Tinney, Sienna DeSantis and Yasmine Hemida placed 12th in a time of 19:31.852, just behind two Virginia crews that finished behind the Orange "A" boat.
Â
2013 Syracuse graduate Natalie Mastracci rowed in the Canada's London Training Center's champ eight that finished third behind the Cambridge Boat Club and the USRowing crew. Mastracci helped row Canada's women's eight to a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Â
The Head of the Charles, the world's largest two-day rowing event, was first held on October 16, 1965. "Head" races, a class of regattas, are generally three miles long-boats race against each other and the clock, starting sequentially approximately fifteen seconds apart. Winners of each race receive the honorary title of "Head of the River" or, in this case, "Head of the Charles." The regatta will feature over 9,000 prominent athletes over the two-day competition in Cambridge, Mass.

Syracuse continues its fall racing schedule on Sunday, Oct. 27 at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
