SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Sophomore outside hitter Silvi Uattara led Syracuse with 17 kills and a .341 hitting percentage as the Orange lost an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) match to North Carolina State in four sets on Sunday, Oct. 6 in the Women's Building.
After dropping the first two sets, SU (5-11, 0-4 ACC) came back to win the third set against NC State (12-4, 3-1 ACC). However, the Wolfpack was able to pull away late in the final set with an 8-1 run to secure the victory (25-11, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18).
Uattara also chipped in on the defensive end with seven digs and three block assists, both good for second on the team. After taking over sole possession of eighth place on the career block assist list on Friday night, Lindsay McCabe added a game-high five block assists to her total to become just the eighth player in school history to reach the 300 block assist plateau.
Freshman Erica Handley made a solid contribution with 29 assists and four digs and junior Melina Violas had a team-best nine digs.
In the first set, NC State grabbed an early lead by scoring the first three points. A kill by sophomore Nicolette Serratore tied the score at 7-7, but the Wolfpack responded by outscoring the Orange 18-4 the rest of the set, led by five kills from Dariyan Hopper. At that point, the visitors closed out the set with a 9-1 run which was capped by a Brie Merriwether service ace.
Syracuse had an early 7-3 lead in the third set and was able to maintain a comfortable advantage throughout the entire set. After SU took their largest lead at 16-10, NC State answered back to score four consecutive points to make the score 16-14. The teams exchanged sideouts, bringing the score to 23-19, and Uattara smacked a kill to give SU the set.
Just like the first set, the Wolfpack came out fired up and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the fourth. Trailing 10-6, the Orange closed the gap by scoring three consecutive points, with the help of a kill and ace from Serratore. An 8-1 run from NC State essentially put the visitors out of reach at 18-10. Syracuse was able to go on a quick 4-1 run to bring the score to 19-14. However, the Wolfpack proved to be too tough for the Orange and closed out the match at 25-18.
Hopper's 16 kills led the NC State attack while Alesha Wilson chipped in with 10 kills. The duo combined for just four attack errors, compiling a .458 hitting percentage. Wilson also finished with five total blocks.
