GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman setter Erica Handley (Lakeville, Minn.) continues to be a bright spot on the Syracuse volleyball team in her first year, collecting her second Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week award as announced by the conference on Monday, Nov. 18.
It is Handley's second conference honor in just four weeks. She also earned Freshman of the Week back on Oct. 28 after leading the Orange to a pair of victories. Handley is only one of three players this season to repeat as ACC Freshman of the Week. The other two are Clemson's Leah Perri and Virginia's Jasmine Burton, both outside hitters.
In a weekend split with Pittsburgh and Maryland, Handley averaged 10.4 assists per set to up her season average to 8.87 assists per set overall and 9.27 in the ACC, both of which lead all rookie setters in the conference. Handley also continues to be lethal on the serve, totaling five aces during the weekend, including four in the win over Maryland. She leads the team with 27 this season.
Against the Terps, Handley dished out 48 assists, which is the second most in a four-setter for the Lakeville, Minn. native. She also recorded 1.86 digs per set across the two contests, good for third highest on the team. That total included an eight-dig performance versus Maryland, the second highest output of Handley's career.
Handley and the Orange (14-14, 9-7 ACC) make return trips to Clemson on Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. and Georgia Tech on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.
