NEWTON, Mass. - Three-straight first-half goals by Leonie Geyer, Emma Russell and Lauren Brooks erased an early one-goal deficit and guided No. 2 Syracuse field hockey to a 3-1 victory vs. No. 11 Boston College on Thursday in the ACC Championship quarterfinals at the BC Field Hockey Complex.
With the win over the seven-seed Eagles, the second-seeded Orange advances to the semifinals where it will face third-seeded North Carolina on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Tar Heels defeated six-seed Wake Forest, 3-2. The match-up with UNC will be a rematch of SU's 1-0 win at Coyne Stadium in the regular season finale last Saturday.
After BC took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, the Orange, playing in its first ever ACC tournament game, scored three unanswered goals by its top three scorers on the season in the 22nd, 28th and 35th minutes to take control of the game.
BC's Chapin Duke opened the scoring in the 17th minute when she converted on the Eagles' first shot of the game, taking a short cross from AshLeigh Sebia following a turnover and scoring her fifth goal of the season.
Geyer tied the game in the 22nd minute, converting a straight hit on a penalty corner for the senior's 11th goal of the season. Russell and Jordan Page picked up assists on the play.
Russell put SU up, 2-1, in the 28th minute, depositing a rebound into the back of the net after shots by Brooks and Karlee Farr were stopped. It was the sophomore forward's 12th goal of the season.
With the Orange attacking in the closing seconds of the first half, Geyer blasted a shot from the right side that Brooks made a diving redirect on, tipping it into the top of the cage with .4 seconds left, making it a 3-1 game at halftime. It was the junior captain's team-high 13th goal of the season, while Geyer picked up her club-best 13th assist of the season.
Syracuse outshot the Eagles, 18-8, overall, including a 14-4 edge in the first half. The teams played a scoreless second half with shots tied, 4-4. Penalty corners were 5-1 in favor of the Orange, 2-0 in the first half and 3-1 in the second.
Jess Jecko made six saves in goal to earn her 16th victory of the season for SU. BC's Leah Settipane made nine saves.
