Box Score
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.—The Orange (5-4-0, 1-0-0 CHA) used excellent defense to skate past Penn State (2-8-1, 0-3-0 CHA) in its College Hockey America opener. Kallie Billadeau earned her third win of the season, stopping 17 shots along the way.
'Cuse pressured the Nittany Lions on offense, putting 39 shots on target, a season high. The SU defense only allowed 18 shots on Billadeau, the least by an opponent this season.
Melissa Piacentini scored both SU goals and Kaillie Goodnough assisted on each of them.
Syracuse's power play unit struck early against Penn State, scoring on the first man-up opportunity of the contest 3:10 into the first period. Nicole Renault passed the puck to Goonough who wound up and took a shot from the top of the right circle which was tipped in by Piacentini in front of the goal past PSU goalie Nicole Paniccia to take an early 1-0 lead.
Penn State ruined the SU penalty kill unit's streak of 27 straight man-down stops when the Nittany Lions rebounded a shot into the top of the goal. Billadeau made a save but couldn't hold onto the puck. An SU defender attempted to fling the puck outside of the attack zone but PSU sophomore Jordin Pardoski intercepted it and sent it into the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 2:30 remaining in the first period. This goal ended Penn State's seven period scoring drought that began on Oct. 27 against UNH.
Despite two power play opportunities, the Orange were unable to regain the lead in the second period and the score remained at 1-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Piacentini scored her second of the day to take a 2-1 lead 1:27 into the third period. Credit the assist to Heather Schwarz, her first career point.
The Orange held off the Nittany Lions for the last 18:33 minutes to clinch SU's first conference win of the season.Â
Syracuse takes on Penn State again tomorrow, Sunday Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena.
