SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse women's ice hockey team had its eight-game winning streak snapped by No. 8/9 Mercyhurst at Tennity Ice Pavilion in a 5-3 loss. The two teams battled back and forth the whole game until the Lakers scored three-straight goals in the last nine minutes of the contest. The Orange (18-12-1, 12-4-1 CHA) hosted its Skate for the Cure weekend tonight against Mercyhurst and will continue it tomorrow when the two teams meet again at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
The Lakers first strike came only 56 seconds into the game. Kelsey Welch retrieved the puck right in front of the left post, where she was able to get it over Billadeau's pad and into the net.
Almost halfway thought the second period, sophomore Nicole Ferrara would tie up the game. Senior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe took the shot on the right post that was saved by Stephanie Ciampa. The puck rebounded across the goal where Ferrara gathered it and shot it top shelf to tie it up, 1-1, at 8:50.
The Lakers would take the lead again after Lauren Jones put Mercyhurst up, 2-1, after she gathered her own rebound and found the back of the net.
SU would tie the game, 2-2, against off of a goal from sophomore forward Shiann Darkangelo at 6:16 in the second period. Carrie-Mattimoe recorded her second assist of the night after passing the puck to Nicole Ferrara. Ferrara found Darkangelo in the corner, who then dug it out and skated to the net to score her 14th tally of the season.
Two minutes later, the Orange would take its only lead of the game with a goal by junior forward Julie Knerr. Knerr took the puck away from a Laker at the blue line and beat three Mercyhurst defender's on her way to the net. She shot the puck top shelf to give SU a 3-2 lead at 8:25.
At 11:30, Christine Bestland put the game back in a deadlock, 3-3. Five minutes later, Stephanie Desutter put the Lakers back on top, 4-3, at 16:10. After pulling Kallie Billadeau to try and net the equalizer, Lauren Jones scored an empty net goal with 32 seconds left, recording the final score at 5-3.
Billadeau had 25 saves in the game, while Mercyhurst and SU both had 30 shots on net. Both teams went scoreless on the power play, with SU holding MU to 0-for-3 and the Orange going 0-for-5.
