ORLANDO, Fla. – Syracuse softball (4-5) will hit the road again this weekend for another set of tough tests, traveling to Orlando, Fla. to compete in the ESPN Rise Citrus Classic. The tournament is another familiar place for the Orange, as SU picked up a trio of wins against teams ranked in the top 25, going 4-1 in last year's outing at the Citrus Classic.
This season's lineup features more matchups with top 25 foes, as Syracuse will meet #5/8 Texas and #11/11 LSU. The Orange will also face off against future ACC opponent, Boston College as well as Mississippi State and Longwood.
MARY NUTTER COLLEGIATE CLASSIC IN REVIEW:
The Orange went 1-4 last weekend in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, picking up its lone win of the tournament against Colorado State. Despite the record, the weekend was highlighted by performances from senior Ashley Dimon, who recorded her first home run of the season against Stanford, as well as junior Jasmine Watson and sophomore Julie Wambold, who also posted back-to-back home runs against LBSU.
MORE TOUGH TESTS AHEAD:
Syracuse has already completed a large chunk of another highly challenging non-conference schedule this season as the 2013 slate includes 15 teams that made the NCAA tournament last season. This weekend in the Citrus Classic, the Orange will take on two more opponents ranked among the top 25. SU will square off against No. 11/11 LSU in the first day of the tournament, before meeting No. 5/8 Texas the next day.
BOMBS AWAY:
In just nine games this season, six different Orange have hammered in a total of eight home runs. Junior Jasmine Watson is leading the way with three, after tallying two against Charleston
and one against LBSU. Senior Veronica Grant and sophomore Julie Wambold have both recorded two, with both of Grant's against Charleston and Wambold's split between Charleston and LBSU. Senior Ashley Dimon jumped on the board with her first homer of the season against Stanford.
LOOKING AHEAD:
Next weekend the Orange will travel across the country once more, but this time SU will be saying aloha to its competitors, traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii to participate in the Spring Fling Tournament. While there, SU will be up against more competitive opponents, as four-of-five future foes are ranked nationally in this week's top 25 polls. Eighth-ranked Cal is the top ranked team slated for the weekend's matchups.
