HONOLULU – Syracuse softball (5-9) is heading to the Aloha State to face another challenging slate of opponents in the week-long Chevron Spring Fling Tournament. In addition to tough matchups against three top 25 foes, the Orange will also take on the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education in an exhibition game.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS:
SU has already completed a large chunk of another challenging non-conference schedule this season. The 2013 slate includes 15 teams that made the NCAA tournament last season. This week, the Orange will take on three more opponents ranked among the top 25. SU will square off against No. 21/24 Hawaii twice, while also meeting No. 20/17 Baylor and finally, No. 6/6 California.
GRANT GARNERS COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS WEEKLY HONOR:
Senior Veronica Grant earned College Sports Madness BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after slugging a trio of home runs against two top ranked teams. Grant went 2-for-4 against LSU with two homers and five RBI. She returned the next afternoon to hit another bomb against No. 5/5 Texas to give the Orange a 1-0 lead against the Longhorns. Despite the weekend's outcome, the centerfi elder went 5-for-12 with five hits and seven RBI last week, including her second multi-home run performance of the season.
BOMBS AWAY:
Five different Orange batters have slugged a total of 12 home runs this season. Senior Veronica Grant is leading the way with five homers, while Jasmine Watson is close behind with three after tallying two against Charleston and one against LBSU. Sophomore Julie Wambold has recorded two, split between Charleston and LBSU. Senior Ashley Dimon jumped on the board with her fi rst homer of the season against Stanford, followed by freshman Corinne Ozanne's first collegiate homeragainst Boston College.
ORANGE RETURNS TO THE DOME FOR DUEL:
Next week the Orange will return home for its first homefield advantage of the season. SU is hosting its second-ever Duel at the Dome, welcoming Harvard for the weekend. Syracuse is 2-0 in the Carrier Dome after sweeping last year's competition with wins against Canisius and Colgate.
