For the second straight night, Syracuse raced out to a big lead, while holding Bishops scoreless for more than eight minutes to begin the contest as the Orange cruised to a 77-35 triumph over the Gaiters at Champlain College on Thursday, Aug. 22.
Freshman forward B.J. Johnson led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Cooney went 3-of-4 from behind the arc on his way to 13 points. Sophomore Jerami Grant recorded 10 points and eight rebounds while Tyler Ennis added nine points – all in the first half – and four assists.
The Orange picked up right where they left off Wednesday night, scoring the first 20 points of the contest before Bishops hit a three to get on the board with only 1:38 remaining in the first quarter. Cooney was responsible for eight straight points during the run and Ennis scored four points and dished out three assists.
Bishops tacked on a basket at the buzzer to bring the score to 22-5 at the end of the first period, but the Orange held the Gaiters to just three points in the second period and ended the half on a 17-1 run to take a 48-8 lead into intermission. Ennis and Johnson sparked the run with back-to-back threes and DaJuan Coleman and Michael Gbinije each added four points.
The Gaiters opened the third quarter scoring seven unanswered, however could not get any closer. Grant netted SU's first six points of the half to put the Orange back in control and grow the lead to 59-18 through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Syracuse used a 16-4 run to grab their largest lead of the game at 75-28 with 4:06 left in the contest. Johnson started the stretch with two free throws, and after a bucket from Cooney, drained a shot from three-point range.
All nine players that entered the game for SU scored at least one basket. Senior forward C.J. Fair, who suffered a lower left leg injury in Wednesday's match against McGill, sat out on Thursday night as a precaution.
Mike Andrews was the team-high scorer for the Gaiters with 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting.
Syracuse resumes their Canadian tour in Ottawa with an exhibition against Carleton at Canadian Tire Centre, home of the Ottawa Senators of the NHL, on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m.. The game will be broadcast by Time Warner Cable. Additionally, Time Warner Cable has agreed to allow the games to be streamed live by a separate pay-per-view option.
