SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Goals by Lauren Brooks and Leonie Geyer lifted No. 6 Syracuse field hockey (5-0) to a 2-1 victory vs. No. 7 Massachusetts (6-0) in a battle of unbeatens in the home-opener at Coyne Stadium on Friday afternoon. The win extends the Orange's home winning streak to 37 games.
In hard-fought defensive game that saw just 11 combined shots, seven by the Orange and four by the Minutewomen, the teams were tied 1-1 from the ninth minute to the 45th minute when Geyer scored the game-winner on a penalty corner shot with 25:07 remaining in the second half. The senior midfielder's third of the season came off assists from Jordan Page and Emma Russell.
Brooks put SU on the board first just 3:20 into the game when she found the back of the net with a reverse-stick shot from the top of the circle off a feed from Alyssa Manley. The goal was the junior forward's team-leading seventh of the season.
UMass tied the game just under five minutes later in the ninth minute when Molly MacDonnell tipped in a pass from Lindsay Bowman to knot the game, 1-1.
Syracuse's Jess Jecko and UMass' Sam Carlino each registered one save in goal. Jecko's was a big one as the sophomore made a diving stop off a penalty corner blast off the stick of Brooke Sabia with just over 11 minutes to go to preserve the 2-1 Syracuse advantage.
The victory extended the Orange's winning streak at Coyne Field to 37-straight games, dating back to 2009. SU's has not lost at home since a 3-2 overtime defeat against Princeton on Sept. 9, 2009. The Orange has outscored the opposition, 157-30, during the streak.
Head coach Ange Bradley's squad will look to take the streak to 38 games on Sunday when it hosts Ohio State in a 2 p.m. start at Coyne Stadium. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel and can be watched online on Orange All Access and WatchESPN. That game comes after the Buckeyes (2-2) and UMass play on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Coyne.
