SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Leonie Geyer scored on a penalty corner with 4:36 remaining to give No. 6 Syracuse field hockey (6-0) a 1-0 victory vs. Ohio State and extend the Orange's home winning streak to 38 games on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
The midfielder took a pass on the right side of the circle from fellow German Laura Hahnefeldt and blasted a shot by Buckeyes goalkeeper Sarah Lemieux to break the scoreless tie. The goal was her fourth of the season and her second game-winner of the weekend. She tallied the deciding goal with 25:07 left in Friday's 2-1 victory vs. No. 7 Massachusetts. The assist was Hahnefeldt's second of the season.
"Leo is the kind of person that speaks softly but carries a big stick," head coach Ange Bradley said. "She doesn't say a whole lot and that is one of the things we talked about in the spring as far as being a leader, her working on doing more on the field than she has in the past. She is giving to us in a lot of ways."
Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Jecko made three saves to stay a perfect 6-0 on the season while recording her second shutout.
After the teams played to a scoreless tie in a first half that was a defensive struggle with both teams recording six shots each, the Orange dominated play in the second half, generating multiple scoring chances before Geyer eventual found the back of the net. Syracuse outshot Ohio State, 14-0, in the second half to give it a 20-6 advantage for the game, while penalty corners ended up 7-5 in favor of the Orange.
Lemieux finished with eight saves for the Buckeyes, keeping her club in the game.
The victory extends SU's winning streak at Coyne Stadium to 38 games, dating back to 2009. The Orange's last loss at home was 3-2 overtime decision against Princeton on Sept. 9 of that year. Syracuse hosts the Tigers in its next home game on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
The Orange plays its ACC opener on Friday in a 3 p.m. start at Boston College.
