The Syracuse women's tennis team dropped a pair of non-conference matches over the weekend. SU (0-3) fell 7-0 at nationally ranked No. 30 TCU on Saturday, Jan. 18 and 5-0 at No. 19 Baylor on Sunday, Jan. 19.
"For us it's one big adventure," said head coach Luke Jensen. "We are navigating through the toughest schedule we've had on paper to prepare for our new conference."
In the weekend opener, the Horned Frogs (1-0) got things underway, grabbing the doubles point by winning on the second and third courts while the first doubles matchup went unfinished. Senior Aleah Marrow was the only player to win a set in singles action, eventually suffering a 7-5, 3-6, (10-8) setback in the super tiebreaker at fourth singles.
On Sunday, Baylor (4-0) clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and two to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Orange looked to avenge the loss as freshman Maria Avgerinos won her first set at sixth singles, but Alex Leatu battled back to earn the win 2-6, 6-0, (10-8) and close out the contest. Freshman Rihann Newborn was just shy of earning her second individual victory of the season with the match ending while Newborn was ahead 5-7, 6-1, (5-2) on the fourth court.
"I'm just really fired up with this crew as we continue to identify ourselves as a fighting team." Jensen said. "These are the fights we want to get into. We just have to get better. We haven't played up to our potential. The matches have been extremely competitive."
"We will come home and work on some things and tweak some things as we prepare for Ohio State."
The Orange is off for almost two weeks and returns to action on Friday, Jan. 31 at the No. 72 Buckeyes.
