COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Syracuse women's tennis fought until the very end, but ultimately came up short at nationally-ranked No. 71 Ohio State, 4-0, on Friday, Jan. 31.
"We didn't get the result we wanted," said interim head coach Shelley George said. "I am extremely proud of the effort we put forth today."
The Orange (0-4) dropped the doubles point to the Buckeyes (2-3) with losses on the first and third courts just as the junior duo of Amanda Rodgers and Komal Safdar were beginning to heat up. Trailing 5-2, the Syracuse tandem reeled off the next two points just before doubles play came to a close.
Despite not winning a point in singles action, SU freshmen Valeria Salazar and Rhiann Newborn both continued their torrid start to their careers. Neither finished their respective matches, but held steady leads. Salazar was ahead 7-6 (7-3), 3-2 at third singles and Newborn won the first set 7-5 and was tied in the second at 4-4 at the fourth position when the match ended.
Rodgers, who was battling the Midwest Regional's 13th ranked player Gaby DeSantis, was defeated in the first set 6-2, but bounced back to go ahead 5-4 in the second set tie breaker in first singles when play was halted.
"We battled toe-to-toe in all six singles matches," added George. "We are there. We didn't get the result today, but we will turn it. It will happen."
Syracuse plays one more non-conference match at No. 66 Harvard on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11:30 a.m. before its first Atlantic Coast Conference game.
