SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After a two week layoff, the Syracuse women's tennis team returns to action at nationally-ranked No. 71 Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Orange was swept at previously-ranked No. 30 TCU and No 19 Baylor, 7-0 and 5-0, respectively. Freshmen Rhiann Newborn and Maria Avgerinos both showed glimpses of things to look forward to in their matches at Baylor. Avgerinos won her first set of the season, but eventually fell at the sixth singles position. Both of Newborn's games against the Lady Bears went unfinished to keep her record at 2-2, however, she lead her opponent at the fourth spot 5-7, 6-1, (5-2) when the match ended.
KOBELT CHASING THE CENTURY CLUB:
Senior co-captain Maddie Kobelt has one victory under her belt in the 2014 season and needs just 10 more to reach 100 career triumphs and become the 29th member of the Century Club. Last season, Kobelt earned All-BIG EAST Team honors with an overall record of 15-9 in singles and 15-8 in doubles.
SU-OSU CONNECTIONS:
Senior Maddie Kobelt and junior Komal Sufdur both return to their home state of Ohio this weekend. Kobelt, a New Albany native, is the sister of Ohio State men's tennis player Peter.
SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES:
Ohio State entered the season nationally-ranked No. 72 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association but has dropped three of four matches to begin the season, including a pair to top 25 foes. The Buckeyes' top singles player is freshman Gaby DeSantis who is ranked 13th in the Midwest Regional. DeSantis, along with classmate Miho Kowase form the seventh ranked doubles team in the region. The pairing of freshman Sandy Niehaus and sophomore Grainne O'Neill also hold a spot in the regional rankings at No. 9.
