Â
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 10 Syracuse field hockey team hits the road on Saturday afternoon as it takes on No. 13 Wake Forest. The ACC contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Â
For the fifth time in 2014, Syracuse will encounter a nationally ranked conference foe when it takes on the Demon Deacons. Last weekend, the Orange knocked off then-No. 5 Louisville, 3-1.
Â
Bradley's Bite
"We are just starting to get ourselves together. We have more confidence. We are growing as a unit. To have four freshmen starting, there are probably very few teams that are in the top 10 that have that many true freshmen starting and playing major minutes for them. The adjustment takes time and we are starting to see the benefits of that patience."
Â
Hurff Honored
Freshman midfielder Laura Hurff reaped in the honors for efforts against then-No. 5 Louisville and Cornell. Hurff was named the ACC Player of the Week and Corvias ECAC Field Hockey Rookie of the Week. She led the squad to two victories in as many days with three goals scored.
Â
Against Louisville, the Newark, Del. native set a career-best with two goals scored in the team's 3-1 win. It marked the team's first victory against a nationally ranked foe in 2014 and first win in conference play.
Â
Hurff helped the team to a 5-0 victory on the road on Sunday at Cornell. She tallied her fourth goal in four games to pace the Orange to its fourth-straight win.
Â
Complete Performance
In its past two contests, the Syracuse field hockey team has put on a complete performance on both sides of the pitch. The squad has outscored its opponents, 8-1, in the past two games and has now won its last four contests.
Â
Syracuse has clamped down on defense and continued its scoring ways. SU recorded its third shutout of the season at Cornell on Oct. 12 and did not allow a goal against then-No. 5 Louisville until the final three minutes of the game. On the other end of the pitch, the squad is always a threat to score, ranking second in the nation in goals per game.
Â
Series Breakdown
Syracuse and Wake Forest will meet for the fourth time this weekend. SU owns a 2-1 advantage against the Demon Deacons and has defeated them in their last two meetings.
Â
In its most recent contest against Wake Forest, Syracuse defeated its ACC counterpart, 5-2, on Oct. 26, 2013. Emma Russell contributed two goals, while Karlee Farr had a goal and assist.
