GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Bono and freshman forward Emil Ekblom have been named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Men's Soccer Team, the conference announced Wednesday. Bono, a student in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and Ekblom, a student in the College of Arts & Sciences, guided the Orange to a 10-7-1 record during the program's first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Ekblom garnered several honors for the 2013 season. He was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman Best XI and the College Soccer News All-Freshman Second Teams, as well as the 2013 NSCAA All-Northeast Region Third Team. In addition, Ekblom earned spots on the All-ACC Second Team and Freshman All-ACC Team after his stellar inaugural campaign with the Orange.
Ekblom led the squad and finished in third in the ACC in points (23) and goals (10). Ekblom posted SU's first hat trick since 2008 and set an SU Soccer Stadium record with seven points (three goals, one assist) against NC State on Oct. 4.
Ekblom's 10 goals were the third-most by an SU freshman in program history and he was the first double-digit Orange goal-scorer since Hansen Woodruff (10 goals) in 2007.
Bono had a productive second season in goal for the Orange. He finished the season with a 10-7-1 record, including eight shutouts. Bono's 18 career shutouts is tied for third in program history, while his 23 career wins is sixth all-time at SU.
During SU's 1-0 shutout victory against No. 12 Connecticut on Sept. 17, Bono posted five saves, including his 100th career stop. After the win versus the Huskies and the Orange's subsequent victory at Duke, Bono was named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Division I Men's Player of the Week. He was also named to the All-ACC Third Team after the season.
All 12 schools that compete in men's soccer were represented this year's All-ACC Academic Team. Notre Dame's Harrison Shipp was voted the ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career.
