SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â Syracuse field hockey's Emma Russell was named to the Ireland Under-21 National Team on Tuesday, Irish National Coach Darren Smith announced. The sophomore forward is one of 22 players selected to the squad that will compete internationally this summer.
Â
Russell recently competed at the Irish Hockey U21 Interprovincial Tournament. The All-ACC forward and Enniskerry native helped lead her Leinster squad to a second-place finish in the tournament which ran Feb. 7-9 at Three Rock Rovers.
Â
Russell has long been a part of the Irish Hockey national program. She was a first reserve for the Irish Youth Olympic team in 2010 and also competed at the European U16 and U18 Championships for Ireland.
Â
Training camp for the Irish U21 squad runs June 20-23, after which it will compete in an international series June 27-30. Training camp will commence again on July 4-6 followed by the squad competing in the EuroHockey Junior Championship II in Vienna, Austria on July 13-19.
Â
Russell is coming off a breakout sophomore season in 2013 in which she tied for the Orange team-lead in points with 35. An explosive offensive threat, Russell scored 12 goals on the season (second on the team) and assisted on 11 others (second on the team). Four of her tallies were game-winners.
Â
Russell was named Longstreth/NFHCA All-Mideast Region First Team, as well as All-ACC second team.
Â
That all followed a freshman campaign in 2012 in which she scored nine goals and recorded four assists in helping the Orange reach its second Final Four.
