BOONE, N.C. – A six-run fourth inning gave Appalachian State the lead for good as Syracuse suffered a 10-4 setback on Friday, March 14.
The victory for the Mountaineers (8-14), who were playing in their home opener, was the 20th straight home win dating back to 2012. Appalachian State won its final home date of 2012 and completed a perfect 18-0 home slate in 2013.
Freshman Sydney O'Hara (2-for-3) and sophomore Corinne Ozanne (2-for-4) both posted multi-hit games for the Orange (7-14) in the loss. O'Hara recorded the first home run of her career, driving in three in the process. Senior Shirley Daniels added a run scoring double.
Appalachian State scored one run on no hits in the home half of the first with O'Hara pitching out of her own jam to leave the bases loaded. O'Hara put four of the first five batters on base via three walks and a hit by pitch, pushing across the first run of the game for the Mountaineers. She settled down, however, striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
The next half inning O'Hara got the job done at the plate as well, crushing a three-run homer to straight-away center. Senior Jasmine Watson led off the inning with a walk and Ozanne singled to place runners on the corners. With one away in the inning, O'Hara took the first pitch she saw over the fence. The Orange got the next three batters on to load the bases, but Sydney Lews retired the next two and got out of the jam.
After the Mountaineers got one back in the third on a solo shot to center by Cara Parker, Daniels ripped a double down the right field line to plate O'Hara from second and set the score at 4-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Appalachian State tallied six runs to take an 8-4 advantage, a lead the Mountaineers would not relinquish. Following a leadoff double and one out walk, Sarah Warnock hit a three-run blast to right to put Appalachian State back on top for good.
The hosts continued rolling through the inning with a single and double that placed a pair of runners in scoring position and a wild pitch allowed the fourth run of the frame to score. Ashley Seering's groundout drove in a run and Alex Sohl followed with an RBI single to make it 8-4.
Two unearned runs came across to touch the plate in the sixth for the contest's final score.
Syracuse wraps up a nine-game road swing with a three-game conference series at Virginia. Saturday, March 15 will be a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. and the finale will be on Sunday, March 16 at 12 p.m.
