CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Syracuse softball team exploded for 21 runs in two games as the Orange swept Virginia in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 15 at The Park, winning its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference contest in the process.
Syracuse (9-14, 2-3 ACC) got a phenomenal performance from freshman Sydney O'Hara in taking the first game 8-0 in five innings. In another five-inning affair, SU crushed Virginia (3-20, 1-9 ACC) 13-1. The 13 runs is a season-high while the 12-run margin of victory is the largest since a 23-0 decimation of Rutgers on March 26, 2011.
O'Hara got the job done in the first game both in the circle and at the plate, pitching a complete game, one-hit shutout and striking out seven. It's the fourth shutout of the season for O'Hara, tying her for ninth both all-time and in a single season at SU. O'Hara was also a perfect 3-for-3 with a homer, a double and three runs batted in.
Three other Orange women produced multi-hit games. Seniors Shirley Daniels and Jasmine Watson and sophomore Corinne Ozanne all posted two hits and one RBI apiece. Daniels, who was 2-for-2, also swiped two bases, bringing her career total to 72 and passing older sister Lisaira for the school record.
Daniels drew a leadoff walk to begin the game, stole second and after a wild pitch scored on freshman Nicole Lundstrom's ground out to first to open the scoring. The Orange pushed another run across after stringing together three straight hits, with Watson coming home on O'Hara's two-out double down the right field line.
O'Hara helped herself out again in the top of the third, this time hitting a two-run homer with two outs to give SU a 4-0 lead. The long shot was O'Hara's second home run in as many games.
The Orange added three more runs in the fourth and one final score in the fifth to make it 8-0 and run rule the Cavaliers. With one out in the fourth, Ozanne's base knock up the middle brought two runs in and Watson followed with an RBI single. Daniels drove in SU's final run of the game with an infield single in the next inning.
In the second game, the Orange was led by the outfielders Daniels, junior Mary Dombrowski and freshman Alyssa Dewes. The trio was a combined 6-for-10 with eight RBIs. Dewes and Dombrowski each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, with Dewes notching a double and triple.
O'Hara (7-5) won her fourth straight game, yielding one run on three hits while striking out four. Sophomore Lindsey Larkin pitched a 1-2-3 fifth with two strikeouts.
Syracuse picked up right where it left off in the second game, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs in the first inning. With one out and the bases loaded, junior Julie Wambold drew a walk that allowed the Orange's first run to score. After an O'Hara sacrifice fly, another walk loaded the bases again. Back-to-back two-run hits by Dombrowski (single) and Dewes (triple) extended the lead to 6-0. Dewes then scored on Daniels' double for the last run of the inning.
Virginia got one run back in the bottom half on Heidi Velk's leadoff homer. But after that it was all Syracuse again as the Orange scored three times in each the second and fourth for the final tally of 13-1.
