Orange explodes for 14 runs, 17 hits in finale to earn series sweep
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The bats were on display at Virginia in one of Syracuse's biggest offensive outputs in school history as the Orange rolled to a 14-3 victory in the finale against the Cavaliers on Sunday, March 16 at The Park.
The Orange's (10-14, 3-3 ACC) 14 runs tied for fourth highest total in school history while the 17 hits are third best. The last time SU scored at least 14 runs was in a 14-10 win at Binghamton on April 4, 2013. In sweeping the three-game series with Virginia (3-21, 1-10 ACC), Syracuse outscored its counterparts 35-4.
"They say hitting is contagious. Well how do you hit. You have quality at bats, you're focused and you have a plan when you get up there," said head coach Leigh Ross. "If you stay positive and piece together quality at bats, you're going to start hitting as a team. I think that they're buying into it and everybody's feeling good right now. It definitely helped our confidence this weekend. We need to continue building on that and continue playing that same way."
Eight starters recorded a base hit, with six of them tallying multi-hit games led by 3-for-5 performances from senior Jasmine Watson, junior Julie Wambold and sophomore Corinne Ozanne.
Watson crushed two home runs and had four runs batted in. The two long balls gives Watson 36 in her career, which tied and then passed former player Hallie Gibbs for second all-time in program history. Watson is just two shy from matching the record now.
Freshmen Sydney O'Hara and Nicole Lundstrom and sophomore Danielle Chitkowski all finished with two hits apiece. O'Hara, who started in the circle, hit a homer for the third time in as many days. Lundstrom doubled, had a career-high four RBIs and walked twice while Chitkowski also had a two-bagger with two RBIs.
Sophomore Lindsey Larkin picked up her second career win – and first of the season – pitching a season-high four innings of relief. She gave up no earned runs and stuck out two.
Syracuse put up a six-spot in the top of the second inning to set the tone early once again. O'Hara helped her own cause with a leadoff single to begin the frame. An infield hit and walk loaded the bases for senior Shirley Daniels, who drew her second base on balls, scoring the first run of the game. Lundstrom followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 4-0, but was thrown out at third trying to leg out a triple.
Ozanne nearly missed a homer in the next at bat and had to settle for a double when the ball bounced back in the field after hitting the top of the wall. It wasn't long until Ozanne came in to score, as Watson drove her in with a two-run blast to left field for a 6-0 lead.
Virginia countered with two runs in the bottom half of the frame when Iyana Hughes ripped an RBI triple over the outstretched reach of junior Mary Dombrowski and scored on Megan Harris' double. The Syracuse pitching duo of O'Hara and Larkin would retire the next eight batters before a walk to the leadoff batter in the fifth.
The Orange was back at it again in the fourth with three more runs to take a 9-2 lead. With one out, after back-to-back singles by Ozanne and Watson, Wambold plated one with her double off the right field wall. Following out number two, Chitkowski doubled both in to extend the margin to seven.
An unearned run crossed the plate for Virginia in the sixth, but Syracuse picked it back up again in the seventh, scoring five more runs in its final at bat. Daniels led off with a triple and scored on Lundstrom's single up the middle. Watson then smashed her second homer of the game to make it 12-3. After Wambold reached on an error, O'Hara added a two-run shot of her own for the contests final runs.
SU returns to campus for its home opener with a three game series against Georgia Tech beginning on Saturday, March 22.
"Now we get to go back home and be a little more comfortable. Maybe get caught up in some things and playing on our field would be terrific for these guys," said Ross.
Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. and Sunday's finale will be at 12 pm.
