ATLANTA, Ga. – Senior Shirley Daniels doubled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the sixth to give Syracuse a 1-0 victory against Georgia Tech on Friday, March 21 in the opener of a three-game set.
The series, which was originally scheduled for Syracuse (11-14, 4-3 ACC), was switched to Georgia Tech (18-9, 7-7 ACC) due to unplayable field conditions in New York. SU still played as the home team and batted second.
After leaving a pair of runners on base in four of the first five innings, the Orange finally came through in the bottom of the sixth, breaking a scoreless tie. Freshman Sydney O'Hara drew a leadoff walk and moved up to second on a two-out single up the middle by classmate Alyssa Dewes. That brought up Daniels who drilled a pitch off the top of the left field wall to drive in the only run of the game and push Syracuse's win streak to four.
O'Hara (8-5), the reigning NFCA Division I National Player of the Week, was brilliant in the circle, tossing her second one-hitter in her last four starts while matching a career-high 12 strikeouts. O'Hara's fifth shutout of the year is now tied for sixth in a single-season at SU and tied for eighth in a career. The performance was also the fourth time O'Hara held her opponent scoreless and recorded double-digit strikeouts, which is just one behind the Syracuse single-season mark.
Sophomore Corinne Ozanne had two of the Orange's six hits, going 2-for-3 and extending her hitting streak to a career-long nine games. O'Hara and freshman Nicole Lundstrom also had hits for the 'Cuse.
Syracuse put a pair of runners aboard in each of the first two innings with one out, but came away empty handed as Yellow Jacket hurler Kylie Kleinschmidt (11-5) struck out the final batter in each frame to end the threat. A walk by Lundstrom and single by Ozanne had the Orange in business in the first while back-to-back walks gave SU some life in the second.
O'Hara didn't allow her first base runner until the top of the third when she beaned Maddie Lionberger. Prior to that, O'Hara had struck out six consecutive batters. The following inning Georgia Tech finally cracked the scoreboard with their only hit of the contest on a double by Kanani Cabrales and got another runner on following a walk. But O'Hara froze the next batter for her ninth strikeout to end the inning.
In both the bottom half of the fourth and the fifth, Syracuse once again put two on base – this time with no outs. However, Kleinschmidt held her ground and retired the three batters each time to pitch her way out of the jam.
For the remainder of the game, O'Hara only allowed two more Yellow Jackets to reach base, issuing a two-out walk in both the sixth and the seventh. Each time though, she fired a third strike by the batter with the last ending the game.
The pair will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22 beginning at 2 p.m.
