ORLANDO – The Syracuse softball team wrapped up its five-game stint in the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic with a 2-1 setback to in-state foe Fordham on Sunday, March 1.
Sophomore Corinne Ozanne hit a solo home run in the game, her first of the season after tying for the team lead last year. Freshman pitcher Christina Clermont allowed just two runs – one earned – and three hits in 4.1 innings. Her classmate Sydney O'Hara shut the door for the final 2.2 innings to keep it a one-run ballgame.
Ozanne's blast to left center led off the second inning and gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead. It was short lived, however, as Fordham answered in the next half inning to jump ahead 2-1, scoring its runs on a groundout and a wild pitch.
A leadoff single, followed by a walk and passed ball placed Fordham runners on second and third with no outs. A grounder to short by Kayla Lombardo drove in the tying run and with two outs Amy Van Hoven came in to score on a wild pitch after reaching base on a walk.
The Orange looked to get back in the game after putting runners first and second with two outs in the fourth following sophomore Riley Johnson's single. But a strikeout by Rams pitcher Lauren Quense ended the inning.
Fordham threatened in the fifth and seventh innings hoping to add insurance runs but O'Hara would not allow it, keeping SU within striking distance. She inherited runners on first and second with one out when she entered the game and sat down the next two batters. In the seventh the first two Rams batters reached base safely before O'Hara got the next three to fly out in foul territory.
Quense returned to the circle for the seventh inning and retired the side in order for the complete game victory.
Syracuse finished the Citrus Classic with a 1-4 record. For the tournament, senior Jasmine Watson led the team in batting average (.357) and hits (5) and tied for the team high in homers (1) and runs batted in (3).
Up next for the Orange is the Atlantic Coast Conference opener at North Carolina. The three-game series will feature a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 with the finale at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
