SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Making its Atlantic Coast Conference debut, the Syracuse softball team heads to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina in a three-game set beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 8 at 3 p.m. The series will conclude with one game on Sunday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
Saturday's two-game set was originally slated for a 1 p.m. start time, but due to consistent rain in the area, first pitch was moved back two hours to allow the field ample time to dry.
LAST TIME OUT:
Syracuse got off to a good start at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic, posting a 2-0 shutout against Nebraska Omaha behind freshman Sydney O'Hara's complete game, 10-strikeout performance. However, the Orange lost its last four games of the event and finished 1-4 with three of those loses coming by a combined four runs. SU took #17/19 Missouri to extra innings before falling 9-7, leaving the bases loaded in the last frame. Following a 10-1 loss to #25/RV Auburn, the Orange dropped a pair of one-run games to Bradley (6-5) and Fordham (2-1).
O'HARA IN THE "0"-ZONE:
For the second time in just three starts into her career, freshman Sydney O'Hara threw a complete-game shutout with double-digit strikeouts. She finished off the six-hitter with 10 K's. O'Hara is only one of four pitchers in Syracuse history to accomplish the feat at least twice in one season.
DEWES DIGS IN:
Freshman Alyssa Dewes had her first career at-bat against No. 17/19 Missouri with SU trailing 9-6. With the bases loaded in the eighth inning and two outs she beat out an infield single, recording her first collegiate RBI in the process. Dewes was inserted into the starting lineup for the next three contests, and versus Bradley had her first multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
JOHNSON JOGS HOME:
Sophomore Riley Johnson's first hit of the season was a solo homer to make it 4-1 against #18/13 Oklahoma back on Feb. 21. Starting with that hit, Johnson is 7-for-20 (.350) with four RBIs and three walks.
BATTLING RANKED TEAMS:
Seven of Syracuse's 15 games so far this season have come against ranked opponents. SU is 1-6 in those tilts with the lone victory coming against #21/25 UAB, 3-2, in nine innings. That game was the first of three extra innings affairs Syracuse has played versus ranked squads. The other two were eight inning setbacks to #13/11 Stanford (11-5) and #17/19 Missouri (9-7). SU has also gone up against South Alabama twice, losing the first 2-1, as well as Oklahoma and Auburn each once.
CLIMBING THE CAREER RECORD LISTS:
Seniors Jasmine Watson and Shirley Daniels are each nearing career school records. With four home runs under her belt this season, Watson now has 34 during her tenure at SU and needs just five more to break the record of 38 which is held by Alexis Switenko. Daniels, the single-season record holder in stolen bases, has 67 in her career and needs just five more swipes to pass the record of 71, set by her older sister Lisaria.
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA
North Carolina opened play in the Atlantic Coast Conference last weekend, winning the three-game set at Virginia Tech, 2-1. A close 1-0 loss to No. 25 USC Upstate on Thursday dropped UNC to 8-9. Sophomore outfielder Aquilla Mateen boasts team bests of a .414 batting average with 24 hits, two triples and five stolen bases. Classmate, shortstop Kristen Brown brings a pop to the plate, leading the team with five homers and 11 runs batted in, and is second with four doubles. In the circle, senior Lori Spingola has started 11 of the teams 17 games and is 4-5 with an earned run average of 2.83 to go along with two complete-game shutouts.
LOOKING AHEAD:
While in North Carolina, the Orange will play four more non-conference games before heading up to Virginia to resume ACC play. Syracuse will go head-to-head at Elon and Campbell for one-game tilts, followed by a double-header at Appalachian State.
