SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After a two-week rest, the No. 67 Syracuse women's tennis team returns to the court with a pair of weekend conference matches. First up for the Orange is a trip to No. 13 Miami on Friday, March 21 at 11 a.m. SU will come back home to host Boston College on Sunday, March 23 at 10 a.m. at Drumlins Tennis Center.
Â
PROTECTING HOME COURT:
Since the arrival of interim head coach Shelly George in the 2006-07 season, the SU tennis team is 54-8 in the Drumlins Tennis Center, including a 49-5 mark since 2008. That span included back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2010 and 2011 and a 25-home win streak that went from Feb. 22, 2009 through Feb. 24, 2012. Syracuse is 2-1 at home so far this season.
Â
INCLUSION IN THE ITA RANKINGS:
For the first time in 2014, the Syracuse tennis team entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, coming in at No. 60 on March 11. It is the first ranking for the Orange since the initial poll of the 2013 campaign when the Orange was No. 72. The last time SU held a spot in the polls higher than 60 was April 17, 2012 when the squad was 57th. The club is currently ranked No. 67.
Â
KOBELT COLLECTS ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Following a 2-0 upset against nationally-ranked No. 25 Florida State, senior Maddie Kobelt became the first Syracuse tennis student-athlete to be honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference as the women's tennis Player of the Week. She cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at first singles and teamed up with freshman Valeria Salazar in doubles on the first court to win 8-5 against. It is the first Player of the Week honor in Kobelt's career, who is just three wins shy of becoming the 30th member of the Century Club.
Â
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
Miami: The Hurricanes (11-2, 6-0) are on a seven-match winning streak, which includes three wins over top-25 teams. Miami moved up the in rankings to No. 13 after defeating previously-ranked No. 17 Baylor, 4-0. The victory against the Yellow Jackets marked the team's first ACC win of the season.
